POETS OF THE MONTH - JULY 2015

THE POETRY COURT

POETS OF THE MONTH, JULY 2015.

For this month JULY 2015, we have KEMI ISLAMIYA BAKARE (KEMISTREE) as our first [1st] position, with her poem titled DEMOCRACY ENSLAVED.
For the second [2nd] position we have JOYCE NNEBUOGO NWANOKWAI  with her poem titled SONGS OF HER VOICE.
And for the third [3rd] position we have OLADIPO KEHINDE PAUL, with his poem titled NESTLING HEART.

DEMOCRACY ENSLAVED

Democracy is an ostracized sage
Democracy is a Lego game in the hand of man
Democracy, a way of life, killed out of life
Democracy is that freedom, diagnosed with death before invention
Democracy, a word whose meaning was stolen before it was bought
Democracy, a right made illicit before given
Democracy is enslaved
Democracy enslaved
Freedom is condemned to the mind that can still think
Not with the hope of sailing in it
But of fantasy created to live in the brain
Till human race fall asleep
Like an untruthful truth
Democracy is enslaved
Democracy enslaved
Like slavery is rebranded to exist out of chain
To the noosing of the mind
And the imprisonment of the brain
Democracy is enslaved
Democracy enslaved
By illusions and dogmas, planted in our cranium
By News, written how it ought to be
Not how it is
Democracy is enslaved by man
Who, bear out of a woman would break it out of prison?

SONG OF HER VOICE

I've lost a lot in my previous life
Still with the thought that mummy will come home one day
That she will look me straight in the eyes
And apologize for my lonely 25 years on earth
Cos I still miss the song of her voice
That I never had the chance to listen to
So without an apology from me
I want to steal you from God
Back to the beginning of time
When we were set apart even before
We were made close as mother and daughter
So mummy come home if you can hear me now
Cos I still see the frames of your beauty
like karashika night
You are the ghost I'm not afraid to hold
So come home if you can if God will
Cos I've got so much to tell you
So let me start with the first day I met my ex
It was everything beautiful
But now we only exist in space and time
So tell me!
How do I understand the word forward
When I don't even know how to reach to you
How do I correct the mistakes of daddy
When he's not even here to say I'm sorry
It's been a lonely years for me...
It's been a lonely years for me...
And I'm not mad
I wasn't born with a silver spoon
I'm just a little sad you left me at the golden gate
Where I had to struggle my way out of life
I can still remember the taste of kuli-kuli
Swallowed with sweet condensed milk
With my back resting on iron bed
Quietly begging the night to cease
It's been a lonely years for me...
It's been a lonely years for me...
Cos I still mistake eye contact for love
And it seems playing with the boys
Is the only reason I've grown so strong
And I still don't know what is right and wrong
But if you command me to stop
I will stop and listen to the song of your voice
So sing mummy
Sing to me and drive away my lonely nights.
Joyce Nnebuogo Nwanokwai, born 9th of September 1990,am a script writer and a  poet ,I hail from the southern part of Nigeria Delta State and am a final year student of Criminology and Security Studies in the National Open University of Nigeria.

NESTLING HEART

I have a conversation with the moon
As I lay my head at night
Waiting for the break of dawn
The sun outspread a hand of friendship
Filing my heart with fruitful thoughts
The sound of victory beats the drum of my ears
I listen to the rhythm of my heartbeat
Expression of love in my nestling heart
The tallest tree is the pride of the forest
Dreams and vision are the pride of the night
Footsteps on the path of dreams
Where stars have their portion before the break of dawn.

(A POEM) by Chinua Achebe

A WAKE FOR OKIGBO (A POEM) by Chinua Achebe

For whom are we searching?
For whom are we searching?
For Okigbo we are searching!
Nzomalizo!

Has he gone for firewood, let him return.
Has he gone to fetch water, let him return.
Has he gone to the marketplace, let him return.
For Okigbo we are searching!
Nzomalizo!

For whom are we searching?
For whom are we searching?
For Okigbo we are searching!
Nzomalizo!

Has he gone for firewood, may Ugboko not take him.
Has he gone to the stream, may Iyi not swallow him!
Has he gone to the market, then keep from him you
Tumult of the marketplace!
Has he gone to battle,
Please Ogbonuke step aside for him!
For Okigbo we are searching!
Nzomalizo!

They bring home a dance, who is to dance it for us?
They bring home a war, who will fight it for us?
The one we call repeatedly,
there’s something he alone can do
It is Okigbo we are calling!
Nzomalizo!

Witness the dance, how it arrives
The war, how it has broken out
But the caller of the dance is nowhere to be found
The brave one in battle is nowhere in sight!
Do you not see now that whom we call again
And again, there is something he alone can do?
It is Okigbo we are calling!
Nzomalizo!

The dance ends abruptly
The spirit dancers fold their dance and depart in midday
Rain soaks the stalwart, soaks the two-sided drum!
The flute is broken that elevates the spirit
The music pot shattered that accompanies the leg in
its measure
Brave one of my blood!
Brave one of Igbo land!
Brave one in the middle of so much blood!
Owner of riches in the dwelling place of spirit
Okigbo is the one I am calling!
Nzomalizo!

In memory of the poet Christopher Okigbo (1932-1967)

tPC TV. Interview with KEMISTREE

THE POETRY COURT
An interview with a Nigerian Poet.
WINNER of the Eko Poetry Slam (2014) and a member of the AJ HOUSE OF POETRY.
KEMI ISLAMIYA BAKARE (KEMISTREE)

ThePoetryCourt: Let's get to know you.

Kemistree:
hmm, I am a girl that has grown into a lady yippee!
Okay, now to business. I am "the girl from the slum," A voice that speaks of freedom, I am failure's worst nightmare, I am me, becoming a better me everyday, and I am Kemi, the daughter of Bakare who hails from kwara state. I am popularly known as Kemistree.

Kemistree is a gentle lion, a playful strong lady, "omo iya alamala."
Kemistree is a voice for the unseen and the mute. She is a spokenword artiste, a poet, an educationists, and a fan of wisdom and intelligence.
She is the overall winner of the Goethe institut poetry slam (WORDSLAM 2011), the winner of the Eko poetry slam (2014) and a member of the AJ HOUSE OF POETRY.
She is currently studying political science in Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU).

Kemistree is Kemi Bakare, and kemi Bakare is me.

ThePoetryCourt: From the very first "WHY POETRY"?

Kemistree:
I chose poetry because it’s a genre for intellects; it is a riddle that swallows secrets and at the same time reveals them to minds that can still think critically. It is a genre that points out the odds in society, and its purpose is basically to provide solutions to the problems that plague our society. I chose poetry because it is an instrument for transformation, in the same vein that it happens to be a tool for intellectual entertainment.

ThePoetryCourt: Has your family ever appreciated you as a POET? Or have they ever commented on your POEM?

Kemistree:
Yes, especially my mum, she has been there for me since the genesis of my poetry journey. When it comes to rehearsal, my sisters are my audience especially, the younger
one (Ganiyat Bakare), most time I would hijack her from her sleep so she could listen to my
new piece.(Hahaha) "sorry little sis."

ThePoetryCourt: Contemporary poets have written different kinds of poems, yet poetry continues to poetry.  But what remains your definition of POETRY?

Kemistree:
Poetry to me has been a puzzle that expands human mind, it is the language of justice, spoken through the mouth of realists.

ThePoetryCourt: What makes a poem GOOD? What are the attributes or qualities that a GOOD POEM has to possess?

Kemistree:
hmm, a poem is good when its essence is not lost and at the same time, when it is "cliché free", when it is sculpted with some poetic devices, when it informs, educates and provides solutions to societal ills. It is a good one when it gives birth to originality.

ThePoetryCourt: What books do you read?

Kemistree:
I read just any book but, I read psychological and\ philosophical books often.

ThePoetryCourt: How do you recognize a GOOD POET, in terms of their work?

Kemistree:
no poet is a bad poet, there may be some poems that are closely related to UN-POETRY poems from poets (laughs) but, that does not make a poet a bad poet. But sincerely, good poets don’t drown too much in sentiment, either consciously or unconsciously. They don’t find shelter under the umbrella of too much vocabulary. Their poems informs, and projects an idea spiced with some crucial poetic devices.

Good poets don’t choke their poems with imageries that cannot be deciphered because choking of a poem with too much vocabulary and imageries will make the essence of a poem to be defeated.

ThePoetryCourt: Who are those poets that influence your writing? That's if there is any.

Kemistree:
From onset, it was AJ Dagga Tolar while Uche Uwadinachi influenced my performance.
Currently it being influenced by the society.

ThePoetryCourt: Can poetry change a corrupt society?

Kemistree:
yes, poetry is doing that, and it would continue to right the wrongs of the society.

ThePoetryCourt: Help us with three (3) Poetry Platforms that are really supporting poetry in Nigeria.

Kemistree:
hmmm, there are lots of platforms that support poetry in Nigeria, mentioning three out of all is like using only syringe to perform a surgery.
ThePoetryCourt: Apart from POETRY do you write any other genre?

Kemistree:
Apart from poetry, I do articles.

ThePoetryCourt: What are your aims while writing?

Kemistree: My aims are to project the sweetness of poetry, remind all of us of the unjust acts of ignoring the voices of those who speak through our pen and voice. My major aim is to see to it that we stop domestic violence and of course the tidal wave of violence that flooded our country, Nigeria and the world.

ThePoetryCourt: What's your advice for other young and aspiring poets?

Kemistree:
learn new things everyday for it is healthy, read wide, define to yourself the reason why you prefer poetry, write without being too sentimental, don’t get carried away by praises, rehearse very hard if you must, be passionate and remember not to be someone else’s replica for so long because originality matters.

ThePoetryCourt: Thanks for being with us, and hope we can get your attention some other time?

Kemitree: certainly. Thank you for the opportunity.
