A POEM by Akinyemi Bliss

Parents listen to your children
We are the leaders of tomorrow
Try to pay our school fees
And give us sound education

Oh! What a pity.

Today I speak with the voice of a thousand graduates who sang this song over a decade ago
But are nothing but degree owning labourers and okada riders
Whose worn out shoes have been deprived of the ko ko ka sound

Today, i stand to say that I know we are the leaders of tomorrow
Though no one ever told us tomorrow will always be tomorrow in a nation where
The beauty of our old men no longer lives in their grey head
But now resides in their shameless acts of corruption

A nation where the glory of the youths no longer abide in their strength
But dwells on dubious thoughts, of means of acquiring without perspiring
Just like our so called leaders

Today I stand to ask
Why the only infrastructure they care about is the one that relates to their stomach
And the only amenities they provide are the ones that benefit them
We care to know why promises are hard to keep in this part of the world.

Yes! We want to know why the government owes corp members when their children wallow in abundance
We want to know why graduates are denied jobs despite passing interviews while relatives of the wealthy are hired with just a phone call

We need to know why institutions sell a thousand forms and admit less than a hundred children who have legs
We need to know what happened to merit?

Did merit die on merit?
They who enjoyed free education have come to make learning a living hell for us
Our tertiary institutions are filled with fresh stalites who spent years at home before gaining admission
because jamb never stopped jamming them
Still, there's no assurance of strikes not striking them with extra years.

Sometimes we wonder if the tales our parents tell of this nation are truly true

But then,
Why is our Nation's report card filled in red ink?
What is the cause of our bad roads?
Why is our health sector sick and our education system failing?
Why is our security sector unsecured?
Why is our naira worthless?

Why can't graduates get jobs?
Why are workers being owed salaries?
Why can't peace pitch it's tent amongst us?
Why do we never get answers?

Emebiriodo Ugochukwu Peterson a.k.a Hitch, who has performed on many stages across the country, was born in Abule Egba, Lagos, Nigeria. He is from Abia state, the fifth of five children. He’s a student, hustler (art is his hustle) and a poet of pidgin and English expression. He is the founder of the Port Harcourt based performance poetry group Word Phantomz. He loves photography, female bikers and literature.

Why spoken word? Well, poetry generally is my thing; page or stage. I used to be very shy growing up but poetry gave me the opportunity to think out loud on paper, express myself and of course also hide some of what I felt. I’m also an Adventist boy, so church played a vital role in my stage management; weekly memory verses from the church also allowed me to master my lines faster. Basically spoken word/ poetry is my form of expression. It’s also a tool for social change, and I love positive change.

Algerian Poet Sentenced to 2 Years for Facebook Poem By Harriet Staff

Poet Mohamed Tamalt was arrested on June 27th for posting a video to Facebook that featured a poem critical of Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Today, Human Rights Watch reports Tamalt has been sentenced to 2 Years in prison. More:
Police arrested Tamalt, a freelance journalist with dual Algerian and British nationality, near his parents’ house in Algiers. On June 28, they brought him before the First Instance Court of Sidi Mhamed in Algiers, where an investigative judge ordered his detention for “offending the president” and “defaming a public authority” under articles 144bis and 146 of the penal code.
The charges against Tamalt were for posts on his Facebook page that included a video he shared on April 2, showing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika greeting former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and a poem containing insulting verses about Bouteflika. The video was also uploaded to his online journal.
Even though these offenses carry no prison terms but only fines, the court ordered his detention pending trial. The court rejected his request for bail on July 4, prompting his lawyers to walk out in protest at what they considered to be arbitrary detention, one of his lawyers, Noureddine Benissad, told Human Rights Watch. He said that during a hearing on July 11, the court added a charge for an offense against a public official, under article 144, which provides for up to two years in prison. The same day, the court convicted Tamalt and sentenced him to two years in prison for this offense and imposed a 200,000 dinars (US$1,800) fine.

Young Writers Award 2016/Certificates of Recognition.

ThePoetryCourt
Young Writers Award 2016/Certificates of Recognition.

After one year of our continuous struggle for, poetry (literature) to be louder than it already is. We realized that poets have continued to breathe life into their art, despite the moribund world that we live in. Where three (3) square meal can no longer be guaranteed for all working class poets/families in the world at large.

We have been able to appreciate/support poets in our little way(s) from the inception of our MOVEMENT for the best. Last year November 2015, we had the maiden edition of our yearly poetry event, tagged BEAUTY OF WORDS I, in honour of the great laureate Professor Wole Soyinka @81.

We called for submission of poems, to celebrate the bard. After scrutinizing, editing and the judging process, we had ten (10) shortlisted poets, and latter on three (3) winners.
To appreciate them, for their effort(s), we issued to them, certificates of  Appreciation and Books, from different authors, to the shortlisted poets, and winners for the Professor Wole Soyinka @81 celebration.

For this year 2016, we have decided to make the second edition of BEAUTY OF WORDS an evening of memorable experience. From an interactive lecture with a bard Nigerian poet to art exhibitions, to performance from 15top notch poets, and 5music ambassadors.

Also in our agenda for the second edition of Beauty Of Words is to give out certificates of recognition to deserving individuals and Awards for three different categories for Young Nigerian Writers.
