THE BUILDING ITSELF IS ART; WHY DESTROY IT ? by Kolawole Taiye

What kind of government orders security personnels to supervise
the bulldozing of an art haven? It must be a government immersed in the
philosophy of 'art has no value.' This government is wrong, art has
value and the value of an artwork is endless.
To start with, a piece of art should not be messed up,not to
mention a whole haven of art that has produced great artists and great
artworks; such is the sad story of artists who watched the artist
village, a part of the National Theatre in Lagos demolished under the
supervision of security personnel's and the Director General of the
National Theatre.
For instance , as a poet, i hate it when a line of my poem is
being tampered with, not to mention a mutilation of the whole poem-it
is like chopping off a vital part of myself at the expense of other
parts. Maybe someone needs to orientate this government ; we need an
'art seer' to tell this government that a haven of arts is as good as
the pyramids in Egypt, that took years of labour and toil to build. We
equally need an 'art seer' to remind this government that a haven of
art is greater than the ruins found in Rome and other parts of the
world-i mean even these ruins are being preserved, not to mention a
whole building.
That demolished building is art itself, having produced great
artists and priceless artworks-in fact, that building was a novel, a
play, a painting,a sculpture, a poem, and everything that art is which
unfortunately has been destroyed out of man's inhumanity to man. I
therefore lend my voice (as someone who was affected) to the many
voices that are saying artists must be compensated, questionable
individuals must be brought to book and ultimately, that the artists
village should be rebuilt by the government who had ordered its
demolition.
